Before this there were other types of railway locomotives in existence like Wagonways that were used for mining purposes. The first steam trains were small 4 wheeled vehicles. By the 1850’s many steam-powered railways had reached the fringes of built-up London. By 1876 Canada had the longest railway in the world linked to Quebec and Ontario.
Railroads played a large role in the development of the United States and may other countries. In the late 1800’s came the electric railways with one of the more notable systems in Asia is the Hong Kong Tramways which started operation in 1904.
Next there were the Diesel powered trains where the trains had an on-board generator powered by a diesel engine. Diesel locomotives became popular after the 1950’s. By the 1970’s diesel and electric power had replaced steam on most of the world’s railways.
There are also High-speed rail trains in operation since 1964 that were first used in Japan, now High-speed rail trains are used in many countries like Spain, France, Germany, China, the United States and other countries. In the last century almost all countries in the World have railways with trains, some more sophisticated than others but trains are used every day for commuting and for carrying cargo.
Steam powered trains were beautiful machines, there are many modern trains that are attractive but there’s nothing like those old steam trains.
